As Twilight Falls
This is one of the stranger bits I've seen... but Elnea has created a Halo-themed Waltz - As Twilight Falls can be found on her .Mac space (with an explanation and lyrics), or via direct download from us (3.1 mb, MP3 format) If we bring down the .Mac page, we'll host a mirror of it, so that the info is available. This one's beautiful... in a really weird sort of way. (Louis Wu 19:13:15 UTC)

Blood Gulch 120
Elnea has whipped up an alternative Halo track called 'Blood Gulch 120' - it's a melding of the Red vs Blue theme 'Blood Gulch Blues' and the Halo theme, all cranked up to 120 beats per minute (she needed a workout tune). OboeCrazy's Oboe adds a great touch! You can grab it from Elnea's .Mac space, but we're hosting a copy as well, because it's not really polite to bring down someone else's webspace. Go listen! (MP3 format, 4.6 mb.) Thanks to HavokBlue for pointing it out before I read it in Elnea's RvB journal. (Louis Wu 16:30:02 UTC)

Halo-themed MySpace Contact Boxes
AJay created some Master Chief contact boxes to use on MySpace profiles (if you have one, you probably know what a contact box is, if you don't, don't worry about it) - check this link to grab one (and the code needed to use it). If you want to see one in use, check his MySpace profile. (Louis Wu 23:01:08 UTC)

Fadeout
Mothergoat wrote a new song for the next episode of Sponsors vs Freeloaders... but that series was in limbo for a while, and although things are looking up again, it almost certainly won't be out before June. So MG got the go-ahead to release the song now. It's Halo-related mostly in the sense that it was created for a Halo machinima series; it's original work, doesn't seem to be based on Halo themes. That said, though - it's pretty solid stuff - go listen! It's pretty short (under a minute and a half) and pretty small (under 2 mb) - but there's a lot of energy packed in there! You got questions? We got answers.
There were a bunch of questions that came in, asking for clarification about the rules for the 7 on the 7th contest - can you photoshop your images, can you use extra (non-Halo) action figures, how do you specify your caption and theme... we've added answers to these questions in the Rules section of the contest page. (Louis Wu 13:54:49 UTC)

7 on the 7th... again!
It's April 7th... which means it's time for... that's right, another 7 on the 7th contest! (Yeah, as though we've been doing one of these every 7th.) Anyway, this one is fun; grab some Halo action figures, pose 'em up nice (keep it clean, we're going to toss entries that are obscene), write a funny caption, and send it along; if you're one of the top 7 entries, you'll win a fresh copy of the Halo 2 Original Soundtrack Volume 2, due in stores on April 24! What's more - these will be autographed by Marty O'Donnell! There's one twist; the theme of your picture needs to fit a track title from one of the three Halo soundtrack volumes. (If you need a list of titles, you'll find a link on the contest page.) Go read for a complete list of rules and regulations... and get to composing those figures! (Louis Wu 18:25:36 UTC)

Sheet music - now for schools
Wow, very very cool. We get email regularly from high school students or teachers looking for sheet music for Halo pieces; we generally send them to Rampancy.net, which has (I think) the largest collection of Halo sheet music on the net. However, most of this is fan-transcribed, and ranges in quality from very, very good to... um, not so good. Konrad noticed an article over at Siliconera which says Video Games Live has teamed up with Alfred Publishing to bring a number of video game pieces to schools. The arrangements seem to be done by teachers... but I'm guessing there's SOME sort of quality control, right? (I can't point you directly to the VGL announcement at Alfred, because it's in a frameset - but it's about halfway down their front page at the moment. Currently, it lists The Halo Theme (for both Orchestra and Marching Band) and Halo (for Concert Band), all ranging from $50-$60, with more pieces coming.) (Louis Wu 19:49:20 UTC)

Halo Case Mod
Nice. Someone modded their computer case - with a cool Halo 2 theme. There's an LED bar that simulates the loading progress bar from the game. You can see a couple of photos in the Bungie.net article. Thanks to Spartan Jag for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 23:23:28 UTC)

Dalteth's Halo Miniatures
There've been a number of people who've converted Warhammer 40k figures to Halo-themed ones; we're hosting a website mirror for Frankie 'Deadpool' G., and both turel and JoeIce have posted cool images on our forum. Now there's a new artist on the block - Dalteth sent us a bunch of images showing off the conversion work he's done. Pretty cool stuff - and it sounds like there's more on the way! Arrr!
Remember that pirate comment Frankie made in last week's Weekly Update, when referring to an upcoming Halo Humpday Challenge? Turns out it was because Bungie played against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week. Frankie did a good job staying with the football theme all the way through the writeup. There's a scary pic at the end, with (as several people pointed out to us) two pictures of Marty in it. And of course, the obligatory First (down) post by Frankie. (And oh, yeah, in case I forget... congrats, Bungie, for pulling out the win in the last few seconds!) (Louis Wu 11:27:27 UTC)

Battlefield Halo
We got word from MR-T, and DT, about Battlefield Halo, a web-based role playing game with a Halo theme. Sign up, look around, and start role-playing in the Halo universe! (If you're curious about what you'd be getting into, you can find some great representative screenshots on this briefing page.) (Louis Wu 21:15:15 UTC)

High School Band RAWKS
Jessica (I refuse to use her forum tag name!) details her involvement in getting her HS Orchestra Band to play The T&R Suite!

The just under 4 min, 18 mb WMV file is being hosted by Mythica, go grab a copy and enjoy!

This isn't the first time we've seen video of a school attempting to play some Halo music, our own CYBRFRK shot some footage a few months back. If the trend continues, I say we all win. <g> Update: while Mythica is perfectly capable of handling the load on this one, useruploads isn't the server for it - so I've swapped the link for a local one. While I was at it, I added a QuickTime version, for those allergic to WMP9. Enjoy! (edit by lwu) (Ding 04:59:07 UTC)

Christmas Wrapup
Whew! Christmas was a day spent with family and friends, away from electronics of all sorts. (Yes, a number of electronic devices appeared under our tree... but their use was put off until today.) That didn't stop Halo fans from around the net from celebrating, though - so we've got a lot of catching up to do! Halo Babies put up a fantastic Christmas wish image, created by HB forum member Etoli. It's still on their front page - go see it. (Once it slips off, you can find it at this URL.) KillR pointed out that his Beyond Halo has a holiday greeting from the Great White North. Stephen Loftus turned his Pillar of Autumn model into a Halo-themed Christmas tree. Both Dillo and Darkneshasfallen posted Christmas-themed images on our forum. And da zing man created a great little 3D animation over at Newgrounds, entitled 'A Very Covenant Christmas'. I'm sure there are more examples around the Haloverse... but that should do for now! Update: There was a great Christmas wish from Amanda, of 7Pandas - I almost missed it. Their QuickTime version is noticeably degraded when compared to their WMP9 version - so I've whipped up another version. QuickTime users aren't second-class! (We're mirroring the WMP9, too.) Name that tune!
Ever had someone whistle a snatch of the Gilligan's Island theme, and then be stuck with it in your head for the rest of the day? (Oops... sorry.) Yesterday, R-T3 wondered if anyone knew the tune that was used in the background of the Halo Demo Promo, released in mid-2002... and Marty O'Donnell himself chimed in with the following challenge:

A reward from me for anyone who correctly identifies it.

There've been a lot of guesses since then - but none have been very close. Captain Spark released just the audio from the trailer (to save you the 5 mb download), as well as a version with the speaking scrubbed out - you can find both in this post. (I doubt this will cause him bandwidth problems, but we'll mirror the files if he runs out of space.) Can you identify that tune? (Louis Wu 12:11:17 UTC)

A Halo Birthday
Hehe - last weekend, I attended the birthday party of Miguel Chavez's oldest son with my kids (Rafi turned 10). The party had a Halo theme... but I didn't put up any pics or a writeup because... well, because Rafi is 10. The cake, however, was designed by Gruntsbane, over at Halo Babies, and Mig sent THEM a bunch of pics... so go check it out! (Louis Wu 22:09:43 UTC)

Halo Theme - Live, on Video
Wow, very cool. This is the first clip I've seen of the Video Games Live production of the Halo music - visit this page, as of right now it's the first 'Live Performance' (a few down from the top). Short film, but makes me want to see that show! Thanks to Schedonnardus for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 21:01:07 UTC)

Name That Tune
Video Games Live, the concert tour that was planned for this summer and will now kick off at the end of October, has a 'Name That Tune' game online to show you some of the music they play. (Halo's main theme, of course, is among the pieces.) Give it a whirl - and check out the tour dates while you're there! (Louis Wu 10:52:43 UTC)

Baby Love
Halo Babies has a new strip up today (of course they do - it's Friday)... but they also have a new contest: come up with a Red vs Blue-themed plot for a Halo Babies strip, you could win a copy of the Red vs Blue Season 3 DVD. Nice! (For those keeping track, 'A Changing of Hats' contains minor Halo 2 spoilers.) Hey, and while you're there... there's another Humpday-like writeup for a clan match between HaloBabies and the Mob of Angry Peasants. (Louis Wu 13:37:20 UTC)
