News Roundup, Wednesday Morning
Wow, when a release as big as Halo 3 comes along, being gone for even one day can cause mail to back up tremendously. News articles pertaining to Halo 3 in the last 24 hours:
- The Technology & Console Blog wants to tell you why Halo 3 HAS to be great. (Hint: it has to do with Microsoft's bottom line.)
- Technomical has an interesting tidbit on Halo 3 - it's the first video game with real time audio signal processing. Emotional immersion for the win!
- Games Digest wins the award for Most Bombastic Title of the Week.
- The Inquirer has a picture of the line ALREADY IN PLACE outside the Metreon in San Francisco. Yes, there are a bunch of people on the street, two weeks early, to ensure that they get a copy of Halo 3 as soon as they possibly can. (If I were that hardcore, I'd move to New Zealand - they'll get it before EVERYONE.) And won't those guys need to go home and take a shower before they can actually play? Defeats the purpose, doesn't it? Update: Luke Smith points out that they're NOT waiting for the game, they're waiting for a chance to play Halo 3 on an IMAX screen. My bad. (Well, The Inquirer's bad.)
- Gamersyde has an early copy of the 'Museum' ad that's supposed to be exclusive to Yahoo today - it's not up on Yahoo yet. Update: It's up on Yahoo now.
- Best Buy has a picture pack and a Halo 3 theme available for (free) download on Xbox Live, according to Major Nelson - if you don't mind the Best Buy yellow tag logo on all your blades, the theme's not bad. (They're not available for previewing at Dashboard Themes yet, but I'm sure that'll change soon.)
- 24/7 Wall Street believes that the Halo 3 Launch is a legitimate event, financially - no new news there for Halo fanatics, but it's pretty cool to see this discussed so far outside the gaming press.
- According to Kotaku, Gamestop will be firing employees who so much as NICK the tape sealing the cases of Halo 3 that arrive before September 25th.

September's 360 - a Halo fest
We occasionally post magazine scans of Halo articles, though we never post stuff before the issue's off the newsstand shelves, and we never post stuff from magazines that have specifically asked to be removed from our site. One thing that hasn't happened before, though, is that until now, we have not been contacted by a magazine and asked to show off some of their Halo content before it's available for purchase at your local retailer. 360 Magazine, in the UK, changes that for us. Staff writer Gavin Mackenzie contacted us about their upcoming Halo Special Collectors Issue, due on newsstands on September 6 (that's next Saturday). They're in the UK, but Barnes and Noble in the US will carry these as well (though likely later than September 6). He sent along the cover for the article, as well as teasers for some of the Halo content (one | two). Even the parts of the magazine that have nothing to do with Halo have a Halo theme - check out the design of the Reviews section this month. If you're somewhere you can buy this - you should. Looks like it'll be a fun read!

Advertising reaches your blades
A long layover in the Detroit airport means time for Halo updates. Some tidbits from our forum... looks like Microsoft has released a free 360 theme based on Mountain Dew Gamer Fuel (along with Gamerpics) - thanks, Darknesshasfallen and KP. Special Edition Tags and Theme

Grunt Hunt
Sam M let us know that he's working on a game called 'Grunt Hunt' - it's basically a Halo-themed version of Duck Hunt. It'll be available later this month from his website, for both WIndows and Mac, and you can see a video showing how it plays at YouTube now. (Louis Wu 14:03:10 UTC)

Halo 3 Themed Xbox 360
One story we didn't get to yet involves the release of a Halo 3-themed Xbox 360. You can see pictures of it at Bungie.net right now, and there'll be a full article about it later today, but the basics are a small (20GB) drive, gorgeous Halo 3 styling, an HDMI port, and an undisclosed price. Reception has been mixed; many commenters are surprised it isn't coming bundled with Halo 3, and others are unhappy it doesn't have an HDMI cable included. Bungie Day Goodies
In celebration of Bungie Day, Bungie has released a whole bunch of fun stuff for you to play with; some of it is available through this article on Bungie.net, and some of it is available only through Xbox Live Marketplace. The article contains links to a new desktop picture (which contains a teaser at yet ANOTHER new armor variation), along with articles about the Brute Chopper, the Close Quarters Battle Spartan armor, and the Extra Vehicular Activity Spartan armor. (The latter three articles all contain QuickTime VR movies of the items in question, so you can get nice 360-degree views.) On XBL Marketplace, you'll find a special Bungie Day Theme, and a set of new Gamer Pics, both as free downloads. (For the benefit of those without access to Marketplace during the 22 hours that this particular content is up, I've posted screenshots on our forum.) Finally, the Blastacular Map Pack (Desolation and Tombstone) will be available for free starting today. (It's unclear at what TIME that will happen - but never fear, if you haven't downloaded the maps yet, you'll be able to do so at no cost sometime today.) Go revel in the goodness! Two new midi creations
Sean Mortensen sent us two new midi themes - both are rather martial. One, Ashes, is based on the Halo main theme (and Sean gives props to Marty once again). The second, Vanguard, was written entirely by Sean, and was designed to be the theme for his upcoming fan fiction, 'Halo: Operation Vanguard' (this will be posted on Friday, in the standard Fanfic update). Since they're midi files, they're tiny - Ashes is 10k, Vanguard is 31k. Go listen! (Louis Wu 12:35:57 UTC)

VGL - in Connecticut
Last night, I was lucky enough to find myself at the Video Games Live concert that was performed at Yale University's Woolsey Hall. Great music, for a couple of hours... and then the piece de resistance - the standard Halo theme, followed immediately by the Halo 3 'Finish The Fight' piece. Miguel Chavez was able to get these two pieces on film - well, on his digital camera. Quality is limited, of course (what can you expect from a digital camera?) but it still is worth watching. Almost 8 minutes, 22 mb in QuickTime or WMP9 formats. (He also put up a copy at YouTube.) (DHalo, from our forum, was there too - he wrote up his account, as well.) Check it out! Custom Halo Theme in Guitar Hero II
In early April, Guitar Hero II will be released for the Xbox 360, and speculation has it that the Halo theme will be available for play (possibly as an unlockable). KP noticed an article at Kotaku which discusses a gorgeous paint job on an Xbox 360 - it's for sale on eBay (already painted on a 360). It ain't cheap - Buy it Now price is $925, plus almost $30 in shipping - but wow, it's pretty. (Louis Wu 23:13:44 UTC)

Mjolnir Mix downloadable for Guitar Hero II?
Wow. The hot rumor of the morning seems to be that the upcoming Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II will have Halo's 'Mjolnir Mix' as a downloadable song later this spring. Coffin Joe saw it last night at Xbox360Fanboy, but today you can find it at CVG, Xboxic, XBOX 360 Wire, MyGen, GamingNexus, OXM UK (thanks, Onebitrocket), TeamXbox - and almost certainly your favorite gaming news outlet. Dashboard Themes - try before you buy
JeBr0nie noticed a new website called dashboardthemes.com; it's the first place I've seen that contains screenshots of all the Halo-related 360 Dashboard themes out there. (It contains a lot more than that, of course - but this is a Halo site, after all.) You can see all three Halo 3 themes there, as well as the Red vs Blue theme. It shows you what the themes look like with all the normal text that will appear over the images - really helpful. A nice resource! (Louis Wu 14:24:22 UTC)
