Master Chief's Celebrity Faceplate Auction
Xbox Canada is going to be hosting the Master Chief's Celebrity Faceplate Auction, in which faceplates (and more) signed by Canadian (and international) celebrities will be auctioned off to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network. In addition to 20 faceplates, there will be an Ibanez Xiphos Halo 3 guitar, and a Guitar Hero II guitar signed by Avril Lavigne. (I'm not sure what's up with the Halo 3 theme - the only Halo-related piece of this auction seems to be that Ibanez guitar. Nevertheless - this is how it's being marketed.) Auctions start this Thursday, December 6, and will run through December 16. 100% of the net proceeds will go to the CMN. Thanks to Funkmon for pointing this out. (Louis Wu 12:44:53 UTC)

Wow, very cool. There's a new article at Xbox.com which discusses a gorgeous Halo 3 theme based on the Emotion pic - it's free, but it's only available at Xbox 360 kiosks in your nearest game store. Go get it! (Bring a memory card.) Thanks to Xbox 360 Fanboy for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 20:54:11 UTC)

A Kiss On The Hand...
Stuntmutt has a holiday-themed One One Se7en for you today - for those keeping track, it has a Halo spoiler in it. (If you're reading One One Se7en, and you've never played ANY of the Halo games, but you PLAN to... well, I'm not sure we should be protecting you from spoilers, but...) (Louis Wu 18:17:53 UTC)

VGL London - a Recap
Looks like the Video Games LIve show in London a couple of nights ago was a smashing success. VVM pointed out a pretty decent YouTubed copy of the Halo piece at the end, and DHalo found a clip of Marty chanting the monk part of the original theme. Awesomeness! (Louis Wu 13:23:37 UTC)

Face It
DunnyPanMan pointed out 'Face It', a song commissioned by Xbox Australia (it'll be used in future marketing) and performed by Phrase, a notable name in the Australian hip-hop scene. News about the piece is at Xbox Australia's website, the song itself can be heard (and watched) at a special Halo 3-themed site set up for it. (Louis Wu 04:58:13 UTC)

Official Halo Sheet Music on Musicnotes
Calliope got word that musicnotes.com is marketing the official sheet music for Halo (they've got the Halo theme and the Halo theme (Mjolnir Mix). Cost is about $5 each (a little more or less, depending on which one, and whether you're a 'Digital Club member' or not). (Louis Wu 11:25:13 UTC)

Remembering his Father
A 61-year-old Halo fan created some music inspired by the game literally minutes before he entered the hospital, and died. His son posted the music on a blog. Thanks to GamesBond007 for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 17:15:06 UTC)

It's comic mania around the net
Lots of Halo-themed or -related comics out there right now:

There are probably others, but that clears SOME of the incoming queue. Update: icefire2288 pointed out a new episode of Inner Geek, too. Update 2: Quikthnkr pointed out Geek Tragedy Squared #11 (with an explanation here - September 26 entry). (Louis Wu 13:12:17 UTC)

Phooey.
So last night, it was reported that the IWHBYD skull was 'found', after 'countless hours'. (Never mind that the game's been out for well under a week.) In Halo 2, this was the toughest skull to crack; in fact, because there's probably an element of randomness in the triggering, nobody's EVER figured out a consistent way to get it. In Halo 3, though... they just pored over the code with a hex editor. Woohoo. I'm posting this to point out that it's been found, for folks who want to play with the skull - and to lament the loss of the discovery by more traditional means. It's not as though it would have been impossible to figure out; the rings you need to jump through play notes, and the musical piece you're looking for (the Halo theme, or a variant of it) was the last one played in the cutscene just before this section. As a musician friend said, "You gotta hand it to Bungie. What an elegant freaking puzzle. With the 4th ring being damaged and all. And the synth sound that the rings produce is so warm and analog and lovely-sounding." Bah. And with that, I'd like to apologize; yesterday (and today) was (and will be) a tremendously busy day, so I'm falling behind on Halo news. There's a ton backed up in the queue - but unless another admin finds time to post some of it, it might be there for a bit. Sorry. (I hate that my enthusiasm for this stuff is so easily damped by cheaters...) (Louis Wu 13:53:35 UTC)

Halo 3 Content Floods Live Marketplace
A bucketful of Halo 3 content made its way onto Xbox Live Marketplace today. First, Morpheus pointed out a Campaign demonstration video, which can be found in the Game Videos category (check new arrivals). Weighing in at 224 megs, Jonty Barnes and Jay Weinland demonstrate one of the large battles from the game. Next, the exclusive content for Gold members we mentioned a few days ago is now up. Look for the "Unite to Fight" ad on either the Marketplace or Xbox Live blades and download a theme, gamerpic and two videos. The first is called "Inside Bungie: Halo 3 - The Story", and the second "Inside Bungie: Halo 3 - New Features", clocking in at 275 and 238 megs, respectively. As the titles imply, they feature folks from Bungie discussing what players can expect out of the story, as well as an overview of some of the new features in Halo 3. (GhaleonEB 06:18:51 UTC)

Exclusive Halo 3 stuff for Gold users on XBLM?
According to this story at 1Up, there is new content on Xbox Live Marketplace that's free to Gold users. However, following the image shown in the story gets me to a page that has 5 theme/gamerpic items available - all of which cost money (well, points). There are supposedly also videos coming later this week - we'll see what happens there. Thanks to Zeouterlimits for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 03:16:56 UTC)

Halo 3 doesn't always win...
The Halo 3-themed NASCAR entry in the Dover 400 didn't fare so well, apparently. It only completed 287 of the 400 laps, and to add insult to injury, the Nintendo Wii car came in 2nd place. Ouch! Thanks to Manny Valdez for the note. (mnemesis 05:20:49 UTC)

Interviews All Round
Over at Rampancy.net, Narcogen uncovered a few interviews we missed - that man is busy sometimes.

  • Dean Takahashi talks to Harold Ryan and Brian Jarrard about what went wrong in Halo 2 - and how those things were fixed in Halo 3. It's amazingly uplifting.
  • Next Generation talked to Jay Weinland and Jonty Barnes about how it's all feeling, and where they're going from here. These guys, too, make you feel that Bungie is really proud of this game, totally separate from any hype.
  • The Armchair Empire sat down with Mike Zak to talk about Environment Art, and how it fits into the whole Halo 3 experience. I'm seeing a theme - Bungie folks who are proud of what they did, and anxious to show it to the world.

Go read 'em all! (Louis Wu 03:19:42 UTC)

Tafiti - Halo-themed search
Microsoft has kicked off a Halo-themed version of Tafiti - go check it out. Tafiti is a search front end from Microsoft; it uses Silverlight (Microsoft's Flash-like layer) and Live Search to bring you lots of Halo search goodness. It requires Silverlight, which is available (for free) for both Macs and PCs, and it currently doesn't work on Safari 3 (though it does, for some reason, work fine with Safari 2) - but other than that, it should be a piece of cake to use. HBO's content, for the most part, isn't indexed yet (there was a mixup on the URLs they trawled, I think), but there's plenty of other Halo content out there on the web - and this is one pretty way to find it! Thanks, Jamey. (Louis Wu 12:08:01 UTC)

Comic Theme
Brodingo noticed a new theme for your 360 - it's listed on Xbox.com, but not yet available on Marketplace. It's based on the Halo: Uprising comic book. Update: according to speed13327, this theme is now up on Marketplace. Update 2: Credit where it's due - agdTinMan put this puppy together, though he reminds us that the Uprising artwork itself was done by Alex Maleev. (Louis Wu 10:51:16 UTC)
