An Interesting Visual Similarity

Whilst watching the tantalizing announcement about Halo 3, something peculiar came up. The end of the trailer showing the colossal, African, metal, glowing, flower thing reminded the viewers present of another film. Upside down though.

Coincidence, no? Bear in mind that the bottom pictures are just the central beam thingie from the movie. And a few of the shots have been flipped to better illustrate the connection.
Also, this mention leans more towards "pretty-neat-similarity-eh?" and not the "stupi- Bungie-ripped-off-Independence-Day" direction. Take that as you will. Many thanks.
