"Just dust and echoes- we're all that's left-" Cortana, the AI, said. Master Chief looked out the cockpit of the Longsword fighter and sat down. He needed to think, needed a break after the long battles on Halo.
"We did what we had to do . . . for Earth. An entire Covenant armada obliterated, and the Flood . . . Halo. It's finished," Cortana told Master Chief emotionally.
"No," Master Chief replies, unclipping his helmet from his MJOLNIR armour, "I think we're just getting started."
The Halo, created by the Forerunner (an unknown alien species), has been destroyed. Master Chief appears to be the only survivor. The Pillar of Autumn, the marines, Captain Keyes, Foe Hammer- all gone. Master Chief destroyed Halo and escaped, killing everyone on the ring. He had to do it, he knew that, but still wasn't sure if he had wasted lives, or used them. He kept telling himself that he'd used them, and Chief Petty Officer Mendez, who had trained him from the early age of six, would be proud. But he still had a crunching feeling inside, that perhaps he had wasted lives, and some of them could've survived.
Cortana was in control of the Longsword now. They had nowhere to go, they we're just floating in space- alone. Master Chief had a well-earned nap in his seat. Rest can be as deadly a weapon as a pistol or grenade; he always remembered Mendez's lessons.
"Chief, the scanners are picking up something. Oh no, no, it can't be! Chief, wake up, you must see this!" Cortana cried.
John 117, the Master Chief, opened his eyes. He looked at the display. A very small sphere shape was flying from the remains of Halo. The signal got clearer, and then it came up on the camera screen. It was the Monitor, 343 Guilty Spark. He had all the NAV information about Earth and all the inner colonies that the Covenant wanted to destroy. They had to terminate the Monitor.
"Cortana, what weaponry do we have on this ship?" Master Chief asked, his eyes glued on the screen.
"Let me check- here we are. Four Scorpion missiles, two fifty millimetre cannons, and seventeen Archer missiles." Cortana replied.
"That'll do. Lock on the Monitor and fire 2 Archer missiles, we need to destroy him once and for all."
"Aye, Chief," Cortana acknowledged. She armed two Archer pods and set the coordinates. She was ready to fire- but then-
"Cortana! Look!" Master Chief cried as the radar showed five large signals surrounding the fighter. The signals had just materialised from Slipspace.
"Holy-" Cortana exclaimed as she stared at the radar screen, "Five Covenant ships: three destroyers and two frigates!"
The camera screen confirmed it, they were surrounded: Covenant ships no more than two kilometres away and closing. On the second camera screen, centering on the Monitor, Master Chief watched 343 GS dock into one of the destroyers. The Covenant seemed to let him in. This was bad news. Very bad news. They didn't have enough fire power to take down one ship, let alone five, and now the Covenant can find out where Earth is and destroy her. It seemed Master Chief's luck had just ran out.
As the five ships powered back up after Slipspace, The camera screen flashed white, and the cockpit was lit up. Without his helmet, Master Chief had to quickly shut his eyes if he didn't want to become blind. The light dimmed, and four clouds of yellow-green gas shimmered where four of the ships had been. The destroyer carrying the Monitor escaped whatever had vaporised the others, and fled through Slipspace. A huge grey ship appeared in front of them, about six kilometres ahead.
"Cortana, what the hell à " Master Chief shouted.
"I don't know Chief, its nothing human nor Covenant. It's massive, two kilometres long, and saved our lives. The markings on the side are familiar- like the ones I recorded on Halo-"
Whatever it was, the Master Chief was thankful. His luck was still with him-
