Rescue

The Pelicans engines roar awakened the Chief as it touched down.

"Chief?" a female voice said in his ear. "We're here."

The Chief looked around at the torn landscape of what used to be Washington D.C. A Covenant air raid destroyed the UNSC Alpha Base the day before. "Why are we here Cortana? The base has been destroyed."

Cortana sighed "Well, all crew and personel have, but there are still files, and weapons we can obtain.

Chiefs eyebrows rose in his helmet. "You mean loot the base?"

"Not exactly. We have permission from ONI to push back the Covenant at all cost. So, we're using the authority given to us to gain supplies."

Chief sighed, "Okay. What should we get?"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An hour later, and fully equipped, Chief gunned the 'hogs engines and raced from the base. He carried a modified S2 Sniper Rifle with Oracle scopes, a rocket launcher, a newly designed Battle Rifle and a sub-machine gun and a full stock of grenades. He also carried intel reports of Covenant positions, and Marine positions. He eyed the map. Marines had been holding off the Covenant in a nearby city for days now. He turned around and headed for the city.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Fire in the hole!" Sgt. Davin Edwards cried as he flung a fragmentation grenade into a pack of grunts. He gave a small grunt as he celebrated holding off Covenant forces for the fifth fime that week. His marines were held up inside of a department store and were dangerously low on supplies and medical support. Of the twenty men in his squad, only seven were totally unwounded, five were KIA, six had minor injuries and two had major injuries. There were several groups of marines just like his stuck in the city held inside of stores and buildings. He had radioed Alpha Base several times, but to no answer. His two remaining snipers on the upper stories radioed in that more Covenant were coming. He gathered his marines around and told them of the situation. "Aright men, it's not looking good. More Covenant are coming, including one of their tanks. Here's the plan, we head up to the roof and try to hold them off from there. Then we haul ass outta this d**n city and join up with Charlie Base 100 miles away. Any questions?"

He looked them all in the eye. Fatigue showed clearly, but no one opposed his fool ass plan. "LET'S HIT EM!" he roared just as a plasma bolt struck him in his face.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chief pulled up into the city an hour later. He spied a troop of Covenant soldiers fighting some marines on the roof of a building. He pulled out his sniper rifle and put a round right through an Elite. Took out two Jackals, then the marines finished off the Grunts. He met them on the street, and he assesed their situation. "Are there any other groups of marines around here?" he barked.

A private named Joshua answered, "Yes sir, but we haven't found them. There hiding just like us."

D**n. Now he had to gather the surviving marines. "Aright everyone, lets go hunting. Follow me."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They cleared out the city little over four hours later. All had gone surprisingly well. The Covenant only had ground troops, and just two Wraiths. They hadn't suspected this much resitance. He had also gathered up seventy marines. He spoke into his mic, "Charlie Base, this is Spartan-117. Can you hear me?"

Static. He tried again, "Charlie Base, this is Spartan-117. Can you hear me now?"

Static, then, "Roger Spartan-117. This is Charlie Base. What's your situation?"

"I have 70 marines I need to evacuate. We pushed the Covenant out of the city."

"Good work. Now, I can send over six Pelicans for evac. ETA is 20 minutes."

"Understood"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After he was dropped at Charlie Base he told the Commander there what he knew.

"Good Chief, we currently have a squad of marines 40 miles away that need help. Be ready in thirty."

He checked his armor, grabbed an MRE and ammo, and headed for the launch pad.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Die you bastard!" screamed Lieutenant Rogers. The damn Covenant had hit them when they were asleep last night. Half of his men had been lost in the first hour. He had radioed the closest base,Charlie Base for backup but they said it was unlikely. They had held off the Covenant for three hours now, and his men were getting tired. His mind drifted off to his thoughts despite battle going on. The roar of a Pelicans engines snapped him back to reality. The Pelicans pilot opened up with her 70mm chin guns and cut half of the enemy forces into shreads. A single figure dropped from the Pelican and began to clean up the remaining Covenant. Ten minutes later he jogged over to the lieutenant.
The lieutenant stared at him in wonder. He had heard legends and rumors, but, a LIVE Spartan? He thought they were a myth.
"Lieutenant," the Spartan said. "What's your status?"
The lieutenant told him of what happened and the Spartan nodded.
"Okay, radio Charlie Base for pickup. Station your men around the perimeter until evac arrives."
