The shards are easily deflected by Jackals in their defensive position (I mean shield up) and that it is essentially useless unless you can disable the shield with a smack or another weapon. Otherwise it is only useful if the Jackal can be circled or if you can catch them off-guard, although I think that once fired, the slow-moving rounds alert the Jackals to your presence.
