Project Contingency - a Fan-made Halo Game
Getting on a plane in an hour... but before I go, a quick note. We got word from the team at Project Contingency about a fan-made Halo game built on the CryEngine 3 engine. It's not a mod for Crysis - it's a new look at the Halo universe through the lens of a different engine. There's a trailer to watch, a website, and a gallery of their work, if you want to catch up. Looking good! (Louis Wu 17:17:41 UTC) (permalink)

We're humbled.
Occasionally, we get thank-you notes from fans - and we always appreciate them. Sometimes, though, the sentiments expressed and the timing of the arrival combine to make things special - and that happened today. A fan, choosing to be known as Jon, let us know why he was happy we were around. There are times, when life gets crazy, that it's easy to forget what kept us doing this for so long... and a note like this goes a long way to helping us remember. Check it out. (For what it's worth, Stuntmutt's still around, even if it's only once in a while.) (Louis Wu 22:31:16 UTC) (permalink)

You can walk all over it.
PyroSporker16 pointed out a pretty rare piece of Halo memorabilia being sold right now on eBay - it's Combat Evolved welcome mat, never used. I vaguely remember seeing one of these before - but it's definitely not a common item. Currently at just over $100, but there are still 4 days left on the auction. Check it out! Warthog Chase
A Forge With Pete we've never highlighted (because I hadn't noticed it until pete_the_duck mentioned it this morning) discusses a gametype he created called 'Warthog Chase'. I got a chance to play this last night... and I gotta say, it's a heckuva lot of fun. It's a Hill game - but the hill is centered on a Warthog. Every 30 seconds, the hill moves to a NEW Warthog. If you happen to be in the Warthog that has the hill, you get points... unless other hogs are near you. You can't kill each other (well, you CAN drive off the map, but you can't run people over, you can't destroy warthogs, etc), so it's all about getting close to the hill (if you're not it) or away from everyone else (if you are). Simple - and really fun. Try it out! (Map variant is here, gametype is here.) And thanks to Mid7night for reminding me to mention it! (Louis Wu 16:44:45 UTC) (permalink)

I want that map as a print. Seriously.
We've mentioned the Silent Cartologist a couple of times recently - some super-cool Halo 1-based artwork has appeared, mysteriously, at this website, with very little explanation. Earlier this week, we got another piece - this time, it's a Progressive Military Map of the Silent Cartographer island, and it's full of exquisite detail. Hey... wanna race?
ibkang1 asked Frank O'Connor about a new modded gametype released recently - it's pretty good news for folks who like to play unusual gametypes in custom Halo 4 games. (Pay close attention to Frank; this is NOT an official 343 statement, you should NOT take what he says as permission to host/release modded content... he says they're being reasonable, and looking at things on a case-by-case basis, and the Race gametype they just saw will not get you banned. The basic yardstick is, are you being reasonable, and not hurting anyone else? The answer to that question is, and always has been, up to 343.) Thanks, DEEP NNN. (Louis Wu 18:03:03 UTC) (permalink)

Wait... plasma rifle too?
At the beginning of this week, IGN posted a three-part interview (one | two | three) with Jason Jones - the focus was Destiny, but there was plenty of Halo content in there... after all, Halo was a huge part of Bungie's reality during the past 15 years. In the first segment, Jones looks back at the Halo 1 pistol, and what actually happened to make it such a superweapon at the last possible moment... and it reminded kornman00 of some of the digging he'd done in the game's code. Check out his post for some very interesting, very geeky details. (Louis Wu 17:52:46 UTC) (permalink)

Space Blimp? Whoa.
Stephen Loftus was poking through some Halo 2 game files and ran across an ambient life form that I have never seen before - even now, 9 years after the game's release! Amazing. Swing by and take a look; it's likely it was actually cut from the game (nobody's been able to see it in-game yet)... but even so, you'd have thought that SOMEONE would have noticed it before now. I learn something new every day! (Louis Wu 17:47:17 UTC) (permalink)

Halo 3 not free in July, after all
At the Microsoft E3 Press Conference, the 'Games with Gold' program was announced - two titles would be made free for XBL Gold members every month. The rumor had been that Halo 3 would be one of the two July titles... but when Major Nelson announced that the first July title was Defense Grid: The Awakening, so many people asked what had happened to Halo 3 that he tweeted this yesterday:

FAQ: "Halo 3" and "Assassin's Creed II" were mentioned as part of the program - no date was given for their release
