 Shocked! 11.11.01  |  9:02am - Peters

First off, is it me or is Chicago a dry town after 9:00 PM? I couldn't even get a beer in Union Station! I won't bore you with how great the game is (probably the best I have ever played), but I will say I was taken by surprise by how compelling the 16 player games were. "Shocked" even! The control is dead on and the aiming assist is very nonintrusive. Some console FPS have that aiming assist that takes your aiming recticle and flicks it over an inch, very distracting! Halo kinda pulls you ever so slightly, which makes playing with a controller GREAT!

Speaking of controllers, there were 2 broke during the event...hmmm? The televisions were Sony 19" to 27" Trinitrons and the sound was either tv speakers or cheap little Walkman external speakers, AND IT STILL LOOKED AND SOUNDED F'n GREAT! Imagine what Halo will look like on a Wega 32" and what it will sound like on 5.1!

What I learned:
1. Split screen is good, no...GREAT!
2. Framerate: 1 player = GREAT, >1 player = FINE!3. Fans were very nice people.
4. Load times? What load times?
5. Lighting during a night level was amazing!
6. Wisconsin cheese WILL get you bound up!
7. My name tags were not all handed out! Levi where are you?

How many days till launch?

Update: I forgot to mention how impressive the texture mapping was. Very fine detail. Did I mention draw in distance? No longer a factor.

Pictures later!

 Jeep Coming Through! 11.11.01  |  1:16am - theocracity

I just got back from the Launch Party meself, so let cut to the chase: prepare for a long-ass review.

I am really glad I got there early. When I arrived (at 6:30), there was already a long line forming. I feel really bad for those at the end of the line; inside, Matt said that the place was filled to capacity, and there were still people waiting outside. However, Marty O'Donnell was prowling the crowd with a video camera, which was cool. I asked him about a release date for the Halo Soundtrack, and he said that the Powers that Be would judge that. He also interviewed me, which was cool.

Anyway, I managed to score a position on a 16-player CTF game first time. Oh wow. Halo rocks. The controller, like many have said, is actually very good; it was immediately comfortable, and after a bit of practice I was doing pretty well (considering that I not a console person). The one thing that annoyed me was the zoom mode; it was too easy to press down on the right stick and go into zoom mode when you don want to. But I was impressed.

My views on Multiplayer: 16 player Halo ownz. Each player has their own setup character, which is saved separately, and there are several controller defaults (as well as custom ones, I believe). The two main maps being played were Sidewinder and Blood Gulch; of the two, I like Blood Gulch the best. My favorite weapon? The Warthog. Running people over is just so satisfying; at one point, I was spending time running people down near the red base, then retreated to recharge shields. On my way back, I 360-ed and smacked another red player with the back of my jeep. After mowing a couple more down, I retreated again, and crested a hill into the face of one of my teammates. JEEP COMING THROUGH! It was hilarious. On the subject of the jeep, it certainly does go all over the place; you can spend quite some time spinning in place (it especially annoying when the camera goes in front of the jeep). But the satisfaction that comes with driving it waaay outweighs the bad things. The gunner and passenger positions are often hard to play because of the squirrelly nature of the jeep, though are rewarding when you score kills in it. Enough concentrated firepower can take down a jeep pretty easily, and while it hard to get a grenade under it, it is great when one goes flying because of a grenade. Though it is very intimidating to be dueling with a jeep when you on foot :D. I wasn seeing much strategy going on in the games, but that could have been because of the large amount of people around. However, near the end (when things were quieting down), shouts of "I got the flag and am being chased, someone help!" really got the blood flowing. I wasn as impressed with Slayer, however, possibly because of the split-screen venue. The levels were huge, and it was hard to find people the lack of jeeps definetly hurt it ;). Those who like deathmatch would love Slayer though. The larger maps seemed to suffer more; splitscreen isn very good for spotting distant figures, and so there a lot of wandering around (even with 16 players). I didn get to play any single player, but from the screens I watched, it looked quite impressive.

Some things Matt mentioned during his speech were the impending relaunch of Bungie.net, as well as a new site Truth and Consequence (I believe that was the name sure about the Consequence bit), a site with lots of Halo goodies, including concept sketches, cut material (including, supposedly, the stuff that got Halo down to a Mature level :0), and all around good stuff. He also mentioned Seventh Column, but only said that they weren talking about it ;). I also heard second-hand from a person on my team that Matt had talked about the PC/Mac Halo: supposedly, he said that work would start on it when they get back from vacation, but that porting the code might be difficult; I wish I had asked Matt myself, because I have no idea how reliable this info is. Still the starting work soon bit is very heartening to a Mac-er.

I saw Mark Levin, Mnemisis and Dan Rudolph there a good game near the end with Mark and Mnemisis (probly ran over you guys once or twice ;D). Also spent most of the night hanging out with Christian from They Might Be Mapmakers don know if this is news or not, but he mentioned a super-secret project that he helping programming. Hmmm. To those I didn't see (vector40 comes to mind), hope you guys had a great time too :).

Overall, Halo rocks. The weapons rock, the vehicles rock, the graphics rock, the gameplay rocks, the controls rock. However, I wont be buying an Xbox for several reasons: I don have enough money, I like the online community that comes with the PC/Mac version, and I actually need to go to class sometimes would eat up all my time if I got it in my dorm room.

Theocracity signing off.

 THE SAGA BEGINS !!! 11.10.01  |  11:46pm - shadab

I just came back from the party. It was an awesome, awesome event. I think i got there just in time since i was standing outside with friends and the hotel people kicked everyone out because the lobby got packed. So i was the first in line.
After i got in, we were taken to a big room with bunch of tv's and four projectors. It was pretty nice. Anyways i contacted Matt and told him that i was told by Louis to do live updates and he was like " What?? I am gonna have to talk to Louis about that". Anyways after that he told me and my friend to stay at the main screen so we stood around there. And i am happy to say that i was the first person to play it.
The game is the most phenomenal game i have ever played. The intro movie was funny as hell and it was a good touch. After that the party got under way. And pretty much everyone got to play. Yeah there were a few hoggers but the bungie people took care of them with nicely.
Poor Matt looked tired as hell and people would not leave him. He was almost always surrounded by atleast four or five people trying impress him but he was pretty nice. Co-founder Alex also showed up quietly. I didnt see much of him but he was around. Marty the sound guy was very nice and was having a great time talking to people and just having fun. The guy who did some of the voices in Oni (the really tall guy) was also there and did the "Dont make me hurt you" impression for everyone. I think it was his wife who i was talking to, apparently she was in complete awe of what was going on.
The food was good but scarce since people picked up three sandwiches and 5 or 6 slices of pizza at one time. But i got a good sandwich and a soda :)
Lets see what else?.... Oh the raffle. The funniest part was when Matt was raffling the XBOX, he had to call three ticket numbers since the first two ticket holders left and Matt was like " I cant believe it. They left !!" They also gave out five copies of Halo and T-shirts.
Lots of people left after the raffle so i played the game for a good long while.
I dont have to stay anything about the game since most of you already know about it, except that the game looks far more awesome and graphically eye-popping then what we see in the gamespot movies.
I also took a bunch of pictures which i will post as soon as i get them developed.
All in all it was an awesome event and i am glad that i was a part of it. Salute to the Bungie people who planned this event and for making such an awesome game.
So my fellow Bungie lovers, play the game, have fun and dont forget to check out the pictures.
Peace out.

 I didnt get a name tag! 11.10.01  |  10:51pm - jaslak

I thought there would be some kind of list or something to get in. Instead, it was some sort of first come first serve deal. If you stood in line outside, you got to come in, and eat free food. I noticed a few people there who were probably taking advatage of bungie's generosity. One group had never heard of Halo or Bungie. Whatever. We got to play for fifteen minutes, on debug units. This was plenty of time to get the hang of it, and it really is a pretty amazing game. I hope the story lives up to the graphics and gameplay... I still think Marathon 2 had the best storyline of any game I've played. My back hurts and I am so tired from standing at halofest and watching people play. Theres a funny story about the XBox give away and some other stuff, but I'm sure some one else will tell it... or I'll tell it tomorrow... BTW, I never got my super-delux HBO reporter name tag damnit!
 Pimps at sea. 11.10.01  |  10:39pm - jaslak

One of the coolest things about the party, was talking to the Bungie guys. Matt Soell, Marty O'Donnell, the surly dwarf, and the on-line team, who worked hard to set this thing up. I asked one of the online guys about pimps at sea, and he told me the story about how the Bungie crew was sitting around, eatin lunch, when Jason, I believe, proclaimed his great idea for a game: Pimps at Sea... and it sort of truned into another bungie joke that ended up as an april fools joke... team XBox was there interviewing people. 16-year olds were trying to impress Matt with their theoretical programming skills, and begging for jobs... Matt trying to tell them that other abilities can outweigh technical knowledge. BTW: either Alex or Jason has a degree in English Lit. Matt surrounded by this huge crowd of teenagers, worshipping him. It was an impressive sight, to see bungie employees and fans talking one on one. I have yet to see another company as cool as Bungie.
 So many people 11.10.01  |  10:30pm - jaslak

The evening started out with a little speech by the drill sergeant, nice touch. Matt Soell gave some opening remarks, then of course Marty O'Donnell had to say a few words. And then the Halofest was under way. Ok, there were at least 200 people cramped inside of the two rooms and hallway. They had TVs set up in both rooms, two tables in the main room were hosting giant 16 player multiplayer action. On each side of the main room there are two giant sized big screen TVs set up for single player campaign. The other room had about 8 xboxs, playing single player. The hallway held food. The food was eaten very quickly. The drinks were all gone before the food reached the table. There were so many people...
 We're in Chicago 11.10.01  |  7:02pm - jaslak

The party started 2 minutes ago, and I'm still in my room! Ahhh! Chicago is insane! Traffic is evil here.
