Well, since no one's going to read this anyway, What does anyone who still checks this think about the European Union in terms of expanding into a power similar to the UN or NATO?
They're entirely economic and don't have anything resembling an army but if they did, do you guys think that they would ever become a world ower kinda thing and actually get something done?
If so, in time to challenge China in a East-versus-west kind of thing?

No, he's ONI...I think.
And I agree, us Americans have a shitload of firepower, but we use it innefectively, such as saturating an area with tank fire as we send in a Company of Marines...
And I'm not sure if Australia's army constantly kicks the USA's arse, but if the two nations got in a war, it would be a stalemate.

To Severian: it never was democratic. America was founded as a Republic... within the past forty years or so it has become Socialist. I guess I could understand that point of view about Starship troopers, but he never bashed on their system of government. He described the whole thing matter-of-factly. And, compared to the rotten core of Socialism America is now, I wouldn't mind if that was how things were, despite the fact that it is a global government--the prospect of which I despise.
To Berconius: Yes, and I hope the powers that be, now and for the next few decades, will prepare. But, of course, they won't--that wouldn't be politically correct. China will whup us when they're ready, and we'll be so wrapped up in our own ever-more-communistic government to do anything about it.
To Mainevent: sometime in the future. Next month, maybe? Probably by next week. I'll start cracking at it now, and won't stop till I get two pages done.

that just butchers the Halo story line with the spartans, marines and ODST.
by the way 343 SB, i read The Third World-Resolutions, and it sucked horribly and butchered all personalities of all the characters.

How the heck did we get to THIS topic??
Well, anyway, as I know Chine won't be much of a big military power for a while. Like, a few decades at least. The reason being is that despite the fact they they have a great deal of potential in terms of man power, their hardware is dying. They cannot MOVE all their men to a hot spot fast enough for it to be something worth sweating over. Their defense budget is also supposedly lacking. I'm not too clear on all this, but that's what my friend tells me.
China isn't a power yet, Walker. They grow fast, but a 2 million man army still isn't any good with rust bucket trucks and a small air force of aging fighters.

About Starship Troopers... I always thought Heinlein attempted to describe how wars are fought by those who never really know what it is about. Those who actually set them up never actually fight.
America is no longer so democratic, if it ever was. Democracy, people, is just a illusion to satisfy the general masses of civilians as the higher-ups operate in systems better described as a fusion of fascism and despotism.

I totally agree with you, NK. Paintball rocks. Me I prefer flying down a fifteen-foot bombshell of a wave, then making a bottom turn into the line of trim. Surfing and sponging giant waves always get my adrenaline pumping. I just wish fifteen foot sets happened more than a few times a year...

What about China? They have the largest army in men.
Unfortunately for us, the Liberal Government decided to spend the military funding on golf balls... so we have no army now. Not even a slingshot!

Marines are our equivalent of a Foreign Legion. They are reputed to be feircer than the regular Army, and there's a reason why Marines always go in first: they can handle the heat.
And if it weren't for national pride, I'd agree with you, Australia has the best military. But I don't. It's just second best.

yep... have been for a couple of years now. and i'm not lying when i say we probably have the best military in the world...
maybe not the best equiped, but we do an awesome job with what we got. the yanks have a hell of a lot of firepower... but that tends to get in their way alot.
i was talking to a marine the other week who is training with us over here... he said that what we can do as basic... the very basic level is completely above and beyond what a basic marine can do... and its my understanding that marines are alot better then your full time army
then on top of that we have our special forces... commando's, SASR...
they are scary bastards too

Getting back on topic, I figured this:
The Chief HAS emotions (tags aren't showing up!) but he just shoves them down inside and forgets.
Here, read this. It's from one of my series not yet submitted.

That's how the Master Chief would show his emotions. He gets scared all the time. He just never shows it. And he never lets it show, and never lets it affect him.

I was so close to joining the New Jersey National Guard. I was in the office, I had 4 years of JROTC under my belt.
Told them I needed a little more time.
I really wanted to do it, then I got the acceptance letter from the
University of Pittsburgh and they gave me full tuition.
Come on you can't turn that down.
So thats were I stand.
If this college thing doesn't work out, i'm signing up.

For people too young to become a soldier, there's always paintball. Which does, I must say, strengthens leadership, problem solving skills, and is played by adrenaline addicts, such as myself.

I'm a soldier myself. so i know more then anyone what its like to fight, or train for something that you don't agree with. but be that as it may, i signed on the dotted line and agreed to a contract...
and in the end, thats all it is. a job. a stint. but along the way you figure out that its not the money or the glory that you fight for, its the guy next to you.
its been said in books, and on movies and talkshows, radios and god knows what else... but you will never experience what its like until your in a situation where what you do depends on weather your best friend next to you lives or dies...
sadly, most people will never get to experience something like this...
oh, and i did read that starship troopers novel... very well written...

In fact, I never even sensed the doubts about leadership... maybe you meant the higher-ups in combat leadership? In the book the war is given no explanation other than it's a fight to the death... no insight into its beginnings, nor how it will end. Just a fight, from the footsoldier's point of view.
I started reading Heinlein when I was about 10. I always knew I liked something about him, but I didn't know what it was until I finished Starship Troopers abouta week ago. This quote (from Double Star) sums it up:
"I am not a pacifist. Pacifism is a shifty doctrine under which a man accepts the benefits of the socieal group without being willing to pay--and claims a halo for his dishonesty... life belongs to those who do not fear to lose it."

Rico's attitude about war seems to be "I don't question the motives, just let me do my job." Heinlein was an Annapolis graduate and served on the USS Lexington, so I suppose he shared the same attitude.

Someone told me once that "Starship Troopers", the book, was once required reading at West Point... But he was a jackass, so I don't really believe him.
And yeah, the book is awesome. Not only does it deal with honor and soldiery, but also in the background are doubts about the rulers that sends them to war, and etc. etc.
Heinlein's best book, really.

Well Nick Kang, the book is so much better and is different. The MI in the book go down in capsules with skins that peel away and then parachutes. Sound a like like how Dietz described the HEVs in Halo the Flood. The dropships from the movie are not like HEVs to correct you. Even though bungie did borrow from the book and the movie. They also borrowed heavily from Aliens. Read the book its cheap like $7 at the book store. It deals a lot with what it means to be a soldier. To write about ODST I suggest reading Starship Troopers.

I've seen the movie Starship Troopers, seen the show, and have even thought about buying Starship Troopers 2. I've never read the book, though.
Having said that, I think the Bungie staff 'borrowed' a lot of details from ST. In the movie, notice how the big plasma bug bolts look suspiciously like Wraith bolts.
Also notice how the Human soldier's armor looks suspiciously like the Marines from Halo.
Their 'drop-ships', if you will, seem suspiciously like HEVs, and their bombers have quite a bit of similiarities to a Longsword...

Well, none of the Halo books go into details about where they get their officers from but i'm assuming its probably similar to today's military as opposed to hoe Starship Troopers does it.
By today's military I mean civilians can go right to military school like West Point.
or maybe join in college like ROTC.
I'm sure with many Marines dieing, they probably do a lot of battlefield commisions.
This means that Sergeants are giving a commision without OCS.
I'm also sure regular Marines who show promise can be recommended for OCS

Here here! My thoughts exactly, Dave. On the terms concerning n00b, newb and such. There are, however, "Novices". Essentially greenhorns who are miraculously fast on improvement and rise quickly in the community to the rank of "regular". Dave, you appear to be one such novice, not a newbie.

STARSHIP TROOPERS!!!! Robert Heinlein ROCKED in writing that. I'm not familiar with the HEV much, but I know those capsules that Walker pointed out. Not INCREDIBLY profound, but definitely works. Concerning their connection to ODSTs, I can see where the term "elitist" would fit in. I mean, the passing rate for Mobile Infantry was something under 10%, right? That's 9 out of 10 people who washed out or died trying their hardest. With a group that small and tough, it would be ridiculous not to feel pride in just wearing the uniform and being able to do what you do.
Hey, Helljumper, do the ODSTs select their officers from existing noncoms? If they do, that would be VERY much like the MI. Five minutes for the padre!

- Someone who is new to the section, but follows proper internet ettiquette laws, and also knows when to say something, and when to, uh, shall I say, STFU?
- Check out stfu.ca - it's about Counter-Strike, and it's about STFU n00b.

Oh, and if you are like my old buddy Schroder, you'd probably just go and beat the crap out of them.

I'm voting Conservative this election, and I will email my MP about making n00bness a capital offense punishable by 80 years in prison (not eligible for parole) or death sentence. There should be stiffer crimes for n00bness, and if n00bness is not accountable, then it should be charged as 'Public mischief' or 'hate crimes.'

Starship Troopers: the original novel of a futuristic Spartan society. ODSTs took their HEVs from Starship Troopers. If you've seen the movie, the book is 30-gazillion times better and gives the exact opposite message. Go read it.

Good job 343 you please me. Its clear that everyone is just ignoring Spanish Spartan's childish behavior. I personally see the ODST like todays US Rangers. They are all volunteer and are considered Special Forces even though they work in platoons, companies, and Battalions unlike NAvy Seals or Delta Force that are squad based units. Great job. I'm happy.

Well, it was a good effort, good descriptions and all that (I'd probably replace calling the ODSTs "elitist" with the term "Special Forces", but whatever floats your boat) but unfortunately, I think we all know n00bs will just ignore this, continue to make the MC some kind of emotionally injured inner-child freak who needs counseling, Cortana some kind of ho, and the ODSTs into... whatever they've been doing to them.
